Come and join us as we discover the major renovations Tot Hill Farm did to turn it into a must-play course.
The Original Tot Hill Farm Course
Tot Hill was developed on part of a 400-acre land that the Asheboro native Ogburn Yates has owned since 1943, where they raised cattle. During the 1990s, three choices befell the Yates Family: to sell the land, to just let it be, and finally, to venture into the golfing and residential industry. They decided to take the golf course route with the help of the famed golf designer Mike Strantz.
The duration of drawing the initial sketch for the original course lasted for 18 months. After the tedious process of sketching and building, the course finally opened in May of 2000. The course then made a lasting impression as it wowed the golfers with its tee area of the par-3 third hole cobbled in the middle of a big rock outcropping; the green of the fifth hole set that is teardrop shaped based in another rocky and sandy area; a cave-like feature built underground that connects the 10th and 12th greens; and lastly, the waterfall that cascades down from behind the 15th green.
The course has been visited by occasional floods where Betty McGee’s Creek washed out the greens in the area, calling for a major renovation.
Major Renovations Made Tot Hill Farm a Must-Play Course
While beautiful, the original layout of Tot Hill Farm is found to be a challenging course by a lot of beginners in the field of golf in addition to the damages incurred by the occasional floodings over the years to make the course more accessible and playable a renovation took place in May 2023 that caused the area to be closed.
As it reopened on Labor Day, the renovators converted the greens to Prizm Zoysia Grass built for a flawless golfing experience, the bunkers in the area were rebuilt, a new drainage system and sanding were enforced, cart paths were resurfaced, and 1200 trees were removed, the facilities were upgraded.
All of these improvements turned Tot Hill Farm into a must-play destination as the changes in the range and clubhouse were described as a facility that is better in every aspect, and the regressed range contributed to the overall aesthetics of the farm; the removal of the trees also played a vital role in improving the air circulation and turf health; after years, the third tier was restored by the renovators into its original health; and the 17th hole’s difficulty was also fixed by bringing back a bunker that safeguards the ball into rolling down the hazard zones.
