TPC Sawgrass was created from the vision of Deane Bemant, a former  PGA TOUR Commissioner. The idea was to build a unique host site for THE PLAYERS Championship.

Since TPC Sawgrass opened its world-renowned PLAYERS Stadium Course in 1980, recreational players could perfect their swings on the same layouts where the world's top golfers compete.

THE PLAYERS Stadium Course, owned by the PGA TOUR, was created considering several aspects:

• It will be the permanent home of THE PLAYERS, and the PGA TOUR players will own it.
• The course and surrounding areas will be built in stadium-style to improve the on-site spectator experience.
• The course will be accessible to all golf enthusiasts. Before this, nearly all great tournaments were played at private clubs where the average golf enthusiast rarely could play.

The inaugural PLAYERS Championship was held in 1982, leaving the players and spectators in awe, although many golfers had mixed reactions to the original design.

In 1987, Pete Dye and Jerry Pate contributed to the legacy of TPC Sawgrass, opening the Dye's Valley Course for play. The two renowned golf architects designed the course in collaboration with Bobby Weed, and the result is another layout that's been recognized among the best of US courses.

One of the Most Anticipated Tournaments of the Year

Held annually in March, THE PLAYERS is one of the most anticipated tournaments of the PGA TOUR, featuring the most challenging layout and the most significant budget on the PGA TOUR.

Decades after its opening, The PLAYERS course is still testing the world's best players on the PGA TOUR, setting the stage for some of the most unexpected finishes. From Jerry Pate's victory to Tiger Woods' "Better Than Most" putt, THE PLAYERS Championship never fails to impress.
