In the spirit of the Ryder Cup, which was some of the best golf I've ever watched, of course, minus some of the over-the-top behavior by some (and some fans), I wanted to put together a list of USA golf destinations that have hosted the Ryder Cup in years past, as well as one in the near future.
Hopefully this will inspire you to gather your friends, and with our help, recreate your own personal Ryder Cup style golf vacation.
1. Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort
The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort, is the ideal setting for your own personal Ryder Cup. The original Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island in 1991, touted as the "War by the Shore", is where the American squad made up of the likes of Paul Azinger, Mark Calcavecchia, and the late Payne Stewart, came away winners in tightly fought matches, 14 1/2 to 13 1/2.
In addition to the Ocean Course, the other resort golf courses - Oak Point, Cougar Point (closed until Oct-1-2017 for renovations), Turtle Point, and Osprey Point - are all exceptional golf challenges to incorporate into your Ryder Cup outing. Not only are they challenging but full of fun.
We have a specific Kiawah Island Ryder Cup golf package, all dressed up. This specific package can be altered anyway you like for more nights stay or more golf.
For groups such as this, we recommend the Villas for the most cost-efficient and overall enjoyable experience.
Of course, if you don't want that specific Ryder Cup package, just the golf, then we can do that as well. Let us know, and we will put together your custom Kiawah Island golf package.
2. Pinehurst No. 2 at Pinehurst Resort
The 1951 Ryder Cup was USA going up against Great Britain, with the Americans coming away with victory of 9 1/2 to 2 1/2.
Pinehurst No. 2, the famed design of Donald Ross, was the host course for the '51 Ryder Cup. Obviously, one of the top courses in the world, you and your group simply cannot go wrong.
Not only will you receive the enjoyment of playing Pinehurst No. 2, but also the 8 other fantastic resort golf courses. In addition to the golf courses, the lodging options are second-to-none.
Although we do not have a specific Pinehurst Ryder Cup golf package, we can certainly put together the ultimate golf outing where you and your group simply show up with the games and teams in mind, and start playing. The losers by the beer and meals at the end of the competition.
3. Champions Course at PGA National Resort
The host site of the 1983 Ryder Cup, the Champions Course was an exceptional test of golf for this event that once again saw the USA squad defeat the Europeans 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. Led, by Jack Nicklaus, the team fought off the surge from Tony Jacklin's squad, with Lanny Wadkins securing the winning point.
As with the other Ryder Cup resorts, PGA National Golf Resort has additional great golf courses to choose from - the Palmer, Fazio, Squire, and Estate Courses - that will test every club in the bag from start to finish.
Lodging options are plentiful at PGA National Resort, with Deluxe Guestrooms, to Junior Suites, and to Cottages (based on availability).
Again, although we do not have a specific PGA National Ryder Cup package, rest assured that we can and will put together a competitive golf outing for you and your golf friends. Decide on the teams, and let the games begin!
4. The Straits Course at Whistling Straits (Destination Kohler)
Although the Straits Course has not hosted, it will be hosting the 2020 Ryder Cup matches. In the meantime, this famous Pete Dye design has hosted two PGA Championships - 2010 and 2015 - where both major championship ended in spectacular fashion.
The closest package we have, not titled a Ryder Cup package, is the Ultimate Buddies Kohler Golf Package, which has all the extra options to make it feel as close to a Ryder Cup outing for you and your group as possible. It will definitely be a golf outing to remember!
Of course, your stay at Destination Kohler will be nothing short of fantastic with the exceptional lodging options with the American Club and the Inn on Woodlake.
Believe it or not, now is the perfect time to start planning for a 2017 Kohler golf vacation. With their well-deserved and earned reputation, and hosting the 2015 PGA Championship, as well as anticipation for the 2020 Ryder Cup, demand is high!
In fact, for all of our suggested USA golf destinations to create the Ryder Cup experience and feel, planning sooner than later is always the suggested route.
