Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort, A Superb Golf Destination

This unique golf destination, just 25 minutes northwest of the famous Las Vegas Strip, is home to a trio of championship golf courses designed by the acclaimed Pete Dye. The architect made sure to infuse his legendary challenge of the field with signature elements such as railroad tie bunkers and sweeping slope changes, offering golfers a different experience on each course. Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort is among the 50 Places to Play Golf Before You Die by Chris Santella, which includes golf courses worldwide, so having a weekend getaway or a longer vacation there will undoubtedly be worth it.

The Snow Mountain Course

This golf course features wide rye grass fairways, seven holes with water, dogleg finishing holes, and a progressive layout. It was designed in 1995. The Snow Mountain is Paiute's original course and storms in at 7,146 yards from the professional tees. It's perhaps the most playable of the three golf courses at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort, providing generous landing areas and many risk-reward challenges. Considering the desert setting, the wind will most likely play a factor. The Snow Mountain finishes strong, offering views of the Sheep Mountain on the par-3 16th hole.

The golf course is well-suited to players of all skill levels. Most of the greens on the Snow Mountain are guarded by deep bunkers that sit below the level of the green. Even though the greens don't have severe undulations, they are large and can be difficult to putt. The Snow Mountain has a great mix of different lengths of holes – there are several par-4s that play under 400 yards and one par-5 that plays over 600 yards. Pete Dye has given players many opportunities to make birdies, but there is also a chance to make bogeys or higher.

The Sun Mountain Course

The Sun Mountain was the second golf course built at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort. It's located farthest from the resort, which gives it an isolated feel. As you're making your way around the course, you'll be struck by the sparse landscape and the mountains that loom in the distance. The Pete Dye design shines at 7,112 yards and features expansive rolling terrain and picturesque scenery with a mountain backdrop, indigenous desert landscape, and sweeping slope changes.

Water comes into play on three holes on the Sun Mountain. The defenses of this golf course are the strategically placed bunkers, including a few pot bunkers on the back nine, and undulating fairways. Sun Mountain was designed by Pete Dye in 1996. The edges of fairways tend to pitch toward the middle, which makes them play more forgiving than they appear. Dye incorporated fescue rough into the golf course's design to penalize stray tee shots, but it's the desert wind that protects the course.

The Wolf Course

From the back tees, this golf course can stretch to over 7,600 yards, making it the longest golf course in Nevada. The Wolf has more undulations in the fairways than you'd usually find on a desert golf course. Because the land surrounding it is flat with plenty of rocks, it will take a couple of trips around the track to determine the best place to hit the ball off the tees. The Wolf features many doglegs and several forced carries over desert waste areas. The greens have numerous false fronts and backs that can lead the ball away from the hole if you hit an errant shot.

The Wolf is the newest and most difficult course at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort. It's also known as the signature golf course of the resort. With a remarkable length and raw beauty, the golf course is infamous for its severe undulations, alternate landing areas, and the stunning 15th hole's island green. The Wolf opened in 2001. The par-3 15th is reminiscent of the 17th hole at Sawgrass with its island green, playing anywhere from 98 to 182 yards. The last hole of the Wolf is not only long, but there is also water down much of the right side.
